FINE SLOOP OF WAR WOOD MODEL SHIP C.1890'S. Comprising a finely handcrafted three-masted polychrome and wood sloop-of-war model ship made by Dr. James Grant Gilchrist (1842-1906). Of good proportions and accurate plank-on-frame construction with detailed rigging, individually carved boarding boats, cannons, masts, and rigging. With hand-stitched silk American flag. Length 52.5 inches, width 13.5 inches, height 40.75 inches. Accompanied by a custom-made wood carrying box. The ship was built by Civil War veteran and noted physician Dr. James Grant Gilchrist (1842-1906), who enlisted in the 40th Pennsylvania Militia in July 1863, studied medicine, became head of surgery at the University of Iowa, and was later appointed Colonel in the 3rd Regiment, Iowa National Guard. A good model in original untouched condition.
