JAPANESE ROOT-WOOD "CLIMBING MONKEYS" SCULPTURE, 19TH C. Comprising a large and impressive Japanese carved ivory, gilt lacquer, and root-wood climbing monkeys sculpture, late Edo or Meiji. The hollowed natural form root suspending a group of 16 finely carved ivory monkeys climbing a vine within the interior. The exterior mounted with 11 additional carved ivory monkeys in climbing or sitting form and further decorated with scrolling vines of ivy rendered in takamaki-e (raised gilt polychroming).
