The borders banded with cloisonne enameled flower heads and with cross-form corner plaques. The halo in champleve and cloisonné enameled and the Gospel text also in champleve enamel. The upper edge of icon bears a Cyrillic pencil inscription, Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich 25 January 1897 which would correspond to the fifth anniversary of his death. Here Christ (at center) receives the soul of his mother as a swaddled infant as the Apostles gather around the Virgin reposed on a bier. Two additional Saints have also been added (upper right). A unique aspect of this icon is that the borders have raised gessoed gilt decorated borders simulating a riza or oklad. The entire image overlaid with a heavy highly repoussé and chased gilded silver oklad with gilt inscribed enamel title plaques. Hallmarked Moscow, dated 1827, Cyrillic makers mark “S. EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN ICON, POKROV, MOSCOW, 1836. Comprising an exceptional finely painted icon of the Pokrov Mother of God, Moscow, circa 1830. This icon combines two subjects whose celebration falls on October first. The Mother of God is seen standing atop a cloud in the air within the church. She is turned toward Christ who delivers a blessing, and she holds a scroll which begins “Ruler Most Gracious, Lord Jesus Christ….” Behind her to the right is a gathering of angels and saints each identified by the name within each halo. She holds her mantel (pokrov-Russian) in her arms. She will spread it above the congregation as a symbol of her protection. Below at center stands Romanos the Melodist. He holds a scroll reading “Today the Virgin stands in the church.” At the right the Holy Fool Andrey raises his arm toward the Mother of God, showing her to his disciple Epifaniy. To the left stands the Patriarch of Constantinople, and the Emperor and Empress. The entire image overlaid with an exceptional and heavy silver-gilt and repousse oklad of the highest quality. Oklad hallmarked Moscow, dated 1836 and with Cyrillic makers mark “S.Zh.” In excellent condition. Breathtaking! 13 x 11 inches. (33 x 28cm).

A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF CHRIST, 1751. Comprising an icon of Christ as the Lord Almighty, the title inscribed at shoulder height Gospod Vsederzhitel. Christ holds an orb with cross finial symbolic of the cosmos and his right hand raised in a blessing gesture the fingers configured to abbreviate ICXC-Isus Christos. The dark blue pallet and heavy gilt highlights emblematic of what Oleg Tarasov would call the Frankish style, being a continuation of the Baroque Armory School style made famous by Simon Ushakov (1626-1686). The lower left corner of icon with inscribed date of 1751. The entire image overlaid with an extravagant silver gilt repousse and chased okald with unique pierced sunburst halo. The oklad unmarked but tests as low-grade silver. Overall, very fine condition. 12.5 inches x 10.6 inches (32cm x 27cm).

SCARCE DEDICATION CONVERSATIONAL RUSSIAN ICON, C. 1750. The prototype of this icon first appeared in the late 14th century. It depicts the appearance of the Mother of God (seated at right) and St. Nicholas (standing left) to the sexton (ponomar) Georgiy Iuruish, kneeling between them. At that time the Mother of God instructed Georgiy to replace the iron cross on the Church dedicated to the Tikhvin Mother of God with a wood cross. It is said the original icon was painted on a board cut from the log on which the Moter of God sat as she conversed with Georgiy. The entire image overlaid with a gilded silver repoussed and chased oklad. Hallmarked Moscow, circa 1750 and Cyrillic makers mark for Andre Gerasimov who flourished in Moscow from 1739-1763. The reverse of icon covered in cloth and with dedicatory inscription in Cyrillic, “With God’s blessing to Duke and Duchess Alexandr Ivanovich Devletkilya and their daughter Anastasia from Aleksandr Mikhailo Drobovoy.”

Here at center Christ is seen within a mandrola standing atop his empty tomb and reaching down to grasp the hand of Adam who is exiting his sarcophagus and gathered on either side are Old Testament righteous men and woman being freed from the netherworld (Hades). In the lower left corner two angels bind the devil with chains and at lower right the Roman soldiers assigned to guard the tomb are sleeping as Christ rises victorious over death from his tomb. The upper margin inscribed in a highly stylized and abbreviated title rendered in Old Church Slavonic, “Image of the Descent into Hades. Very finely painted and in an original state of preservation. The entire image overlaid with a highly accomplished repousse and chased gilded silver oklad set with turquoise. Above him in the heavens an image of God the Father. And surrounding him are four scenes read counterclockwise from upper left the priest Zechariah praying in the temple as he receives the news from an angel (identified here as Gabriel) that his prayers have been heard and his wife Elizabeth will bear him a son to be named John. Below the scene of the Birth of John, lower right, the beheading of John, and upper right, the discovery of the head of St. John.
