SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE CARVED NATIVITY GROUP. Comprising a large and finely carved, polychrome and gilt wood Nativity group, carved in three quarters round, likely Quito. At center the Virgin cradles the new born Christ whose head is set with silver nimbus rays and standing behind them is St. Joseph with silver repousse and chased halo. On the left a kneeling shepherd boy and on the right the three Magi and another shepherd above a carved lamb all adoring the newborn Christ and all resting on an integral carved wood base. The surface with estafado decoration and the flesh tones rendered in the encarnación technique and the heads set with glass eyes. The overall surface exhibiting worming and there is some joint separation and minor losses to some of the finger tips. Height 22 inches (56cm), length 32.5 inches (82.5cm).
