Provenance:

Kunstveilingen Mak van Waay, May 21, 1968, Lot 24, as by Moreelse; Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Alderson Magee. Private collection Kansas City, MO.

According to Dr. Meijer, Curator, Department of Old Netherlandish Painting, The Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD), who states "This was included in C. H. de Jonge's 1938 monograph on Moreelse as possibly an old copy after a work by the artist (her No. 227).  In his dissertation on Moreelse from 2001, E. Domela Nieuwenhuis argued that rather than after Moreelse, this may be a copy after an Amsterdam artist (Cat. No. S2P44).  Among the artists he mentions, Nicolaes Elias Pickenoy is in my view the most likely candidate.  The pose and attributes occur in various portraits by Pickenoy.  In my view, there can be little doubt that this is a (somewhat later) copy; the execution is not up to Pickenoy's own level".
