A FINE BEN FRANKLIN COPPER BAS-RELIEF 19TH C. Comprising a finely crafted large and impressive profile bust bas-relief oval plaque depicting Benjamin Franklin, of good anatomy and proportions with cascading hair and veining. On the truncation of the bust is engraved a French abbreviated inscription Benj. Franklin P. Merveille. Contained in a custom carved mahogany frame. Probably French and likely modeled after the 1786 medallion sculpted by artist and Franklin associate Augustine Dupre (1748-1843). The copper repoussé oval plaque measuring 23.25 inches by 18 inches (59 x 46 cm). Overall size including frame 29.5 inches by 24.5 inches (75 x 62 cm)

PERIOD PRESIDENTIAL PORTRAIT VAN BUREN 1838. Comprising a waist up pastel on canvas portrait of President Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) wearing a black jacket, black necktie and upturned collar and with his characteristic sideburns and upward combed hair. Clearly signed and dated lower right John Langendoerffer fect. 1838. 26 inches x 22 inches. The offered lot is nearly identical to another pastel on canvas portrait of President Van Buren also by Langendoerffer, of almost identical size, and also dated 1838, housed in the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, object number NPG79.218. Lot is further accompanied by a circa 1825 pastel portrait of a young woman in blue dress, sausage curls and basketweave bun, apparently unsigned (21.5 inches x 17.5 inches).

Both realistically carved in full round of good proportions and anatomy, with realistically modeled features, and deep folds. The man signed and dated on verso "J. MOZIER SR. FLORENCE 1850".
