A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MAGNIFICAT MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW, 1797. Painted in the Italianate style, this rarely encountered subject in Eastern Orthodoxy depicts the Virgin Mary within an oval cartouche seated on a chair and in her hand she holds a book of Holy Scripture which begins "My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior." Her clothing shaded with gold and the entire image overlaid with a stunning silver repoussé and chased riza and impressive halo. Hallmarked Moscow, dated 1797, and Cyrillic maker's mark F. G. 12.75 inches x 10.25 inches (32 x 26 cm).
