A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE DOUBLE-SIDED RUSSIAN ICON, NEVYANSK, CIRCA 1800. One side painted with the Apostles Peter and Paul beneath an image of Christ bestowing crowns of martyrdom. The other side painted with the Holy Visage held aloft by two finely painted angels and identified by the ornate, condensed, and abbreviated inscription at top as the "Not-By-Hand-Made Image of our Lord Jesus Christ." Below further inscribed "All things are committed to me by my Father, and no man knows the Son, but the Father, nor does any know the Father except the Son..." (Matthew 11:27). 21 inches x 17.75 inches (53.5 x 45 cm).

AN IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND DESCENT, SCENES OF THE PASSION, AND CHURCH FEAST DAYS, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY. Executed in the miniature technique, at center Christ descends into Hades, freeing from bondage all the righteous of the Old Testament, and above stands atop his empty grave (sarcophagus). Surrounding the central image are 12 smaller images depicting the Passion of Christ beginning with the Last Supper and concluding with the Placement in the Tomb. Further out still are 16 images representing the major Church Feast Days, each identified by a corresponding inscription. The corners painted with the Four Evangelists and the panel constructed with a double kovcheg. Verso with a label of the National Gallery in Prague. 14 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 31 cm).

Finely painted in the Italianate style, an Angel of the Lord guides the Evangelist who, with quill pen in hand, begins the first Gospel of the New Testament with the words “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham”. It is likely that the offered lot once formed part of a four-piece grouping, depicting all Four Evangelists and which was installed on the Royal Doors of an iconostas. 9.25 inches x 7 inches (23 x 18 cm).

At center Christ is depicted robed as the great high priest, seated on an ornate throne with angels below, on the left the Mother of God and on the right the Bishop Saint identified by the inscription above his head as the Holy Priest-Martyr Ignatius the God-bearer. The verso inscribed THIS HOLY ICON WAS PAINTED AND CONSECRATED ON THE HOLY MOUNTAIN ATHOS AT THE MONASTERY OF THE HOLY PRIEST-MARTYR IGNATIUS THE GOD-BEARER.
