A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE DOUBLE-SIDED RUSSIAN ICON, NEVYANSK, CIRCA 1800.  One side painted with the Apostles Peter and Paul beneath an image of Christ bestowing crowns of martyrdom. The other side painted with the Holy Visage held aloft by two finely painted angels and identified by the ornate, condensed, and abbreviated inscription at top as the "Not-By-Hand-Made Image of our Lord Jesus Christ." Below further inscribed "All things are committed to me by my Father, and no man knows the Son, but the Father, nor does any know the Father except the Son..." (Matthew 11:27). 21 inches x 17.75 inches (53.5 x 45 cm).

A RUSSIAN ICON OF CHRIST, 18TH CENTURY. Painted in the Italianate style, Christ holds an orb with cross finial and delivers a blessing. Overlaid with a gilded silver repoussé riza. Hallmarked Moscow and dated 1741. 12.5 inches x 10.5 inches (32 x 27 cm).

A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KAZAN MOTHER OF GOD, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1899-1908. Realistically rendered and overlaid with a silver-gilt engraved and repoussé Art Nouveau style riza with ornate cloisonné enameled halos. Hallmarked Moscow, circa 1899-1908, Cyrillic maker’s mark SG and with 84 silver standard. 10.6 inches x 9 inches (27 x 22.5 cm).

A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD MELTER OF EVIL HEARTS, 19TH CENTURY. Painted in the Italianate style and overlaid with a silver plated repoussé riza with gilded halo. Riza stamped with unknown marks “WW” and perhaps the number 12. 10.3 inches x 8.25 inches (26.5 x 21 cm).

A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION, ST. PETERSBURG, 1895. Fully painted on a gilt ground and overlaid with a silver repoussé riza with silver-gilt halos. Hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1895, Cyrillic maker’s marks EGP, 8.25 inches x 6.25 inches (21 x 16 cm).

AN IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND DESCENT, SCENES OF THE PASSION, AND CHURCH FEAST DAYS, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY. Executed in the miniature technique, at center Christ descends into Hades, freeing from bondage all the righteous of the Old Testament, and above stands atop his empty grave (sarcophagus). Surrounding the central image are 12 smaller images depicting the Passion of Christ beginning with the Last Supper and concluding with the Placement in the Tomb. Further out still are 16 images representing the major Church Feast Days, each identified by a corresponding inscription. The corners painted with the Four Evangelists and the panel constructed with a double kovcheg. Verso with a label of the National Gallery in Prague. 14 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 31 cm).

A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NEW TESTAMENT TRINITY, CIRCA 1825. The top central section with the Trinity and the Mother of God and John the Forerunner. The upper left corner painted with the image Blessed Silence. The upper right corner painted with the Mother of God. On the sides and lower margin a gathering of 18 saints. Some scattered losses and retouching. 21 inches x 18.25 inches (53.5 x 46.5 cm).

AN ATTRACTIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST, CIRCA 1890. Painted within an arched reserve, at center the infant Christ lays in a manger, flanked on the right by the Virgin and Saint Joseph. On the left, three shepherds adore the new born Christ. At top center the star of Bethlehem shines down on the scene. The borders incised with scrolling vines and foliage and on the lower margin the title is written in Church Slavonic “The Image of the Birth of Christ”. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).

A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CRUCIFIXION, 19TH CENTURY. At top center within an arched reserve God the Father, immediately below Him a dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit, and down further still the crucified Christ. He is flanked on the left by the three Mary's and on the right by the Apostle John, the Roman centurion Longinus, and Nicodemus. Additionally, the Guardian Angel, St. Simeon, a Deacon Saint, and another Soldier Saint have been added. 14.25 inches x 12.3 inches (36 x 31 cm).

A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ARCHANGEL GABRIEL, 19TH CENTURY. Depicted full length and finely executed in the academic style. The size and shape suggest this icon was once held in an iconostas, probably the local tier. 45.75 inches x 24 inches (116 x 61 cm).

A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE EVANGELIST SAINT MATTHEW, CIRCA 1825. Finely painted in the Italianate style, an Angel of the Lord guides the Evangelist who, with quill pen in hand, begins the first Gospel of the New Testament with the words “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham”. It is likely that the offered lot once formed part of a four-piece grouping, depicting all Four Evangelists and which was installed on the Royal Doors of an iconostas. 9.25 inches x 7 inches (23 x 18 cm).

A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE KING OF GLORY, CIRCA 1880. At center Christ is depicted robed as the great high priest, seated on an ornate throne with angels below, on the left the Mother of God and on the right the Bishop Saint identified by the inscription above his head as the Holy Priest-Martyr Ignatius the God-bearer. The verso inscribed THIS HOLY ICON WAS PAINTED AND CONSECRATED ON THE HOLY MOUNTAIN ATHOS AT THE MONASTERY OF THE HOLY PRIEST-MARTYR IGNATIUS THE GOD-BEARER. 21 inches x 16 inches (53.5 x 40 cm).

A PAIR OF RUSSIAN ICONS DEPICTING THE EVANGELISTS, MATTHEW AND JOHN, CIRCA 1800. Each painted in the round and set within integral carved gilt wood frames, suggesting that these were once part of a four-piece grouping depicting all the Evangelists as likely once displayed on the Royal Doors of an iconostasis. 15.5 inches x 14 inches (39.5 x 36 cm).

AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN DOUBLE SIDED ICON, CIRCA 1880. Executed on a shaped wood panel, one side painted with the Venerable Saint Sergiy of Radonezh and the other side with the Vladimir Mother of God. 16.5 inches x 10.6 inches (42.2 x 27 cm).

A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE MOTHER OF GOD INTO THE TEMPLE, CIRCA 1825. Painted in the Italianate style, at center the three year-old Mary holding a candle is presented to the temple priest Zacharias (father of John the Baptist), on the far right the Mother of God and St. Joseph and on the left, virgins holding candles. The large size of this icon would suggest that it once was likely part of an iconostas, probably the Festival Tier. 22.75 inches x 25.75 inches (58 x 66 cm).
