Provenance: Estate
of the artist
Cedar Rapids Museum of Art
Acquired in these showrooms by the present owner
Lela Briggs was an
extremely accomplished watercolorist who captured the rural experience
with her colorful pallet and sensitive eye. She studied for a period at
the Chicago Art Institute and summers at the University of Iowa, but was
probably most influenced by her experience at Grant Wood’s Stone City Art
Colony (1931-1933). Her subjects were her surroundings: a neighbor’s farm,
a small country store, or her own barnyard. Her first major exhibition was
the 1934 Iowa Art Salon where she received third prize for a watercolor
work. From that time forward Briggs enjoyed numerous awards at the various
exhibitions she entered. In 1942 she held her first of four “one woman”
shows which produced an avid following. A farm wife/mother, raising two
children in rural depression ridden America followed by war left little
opportunity for Briggs to accept invitations to larger exhibitions outside
Iowa. Her career was cut short with her sudden death at the age of 57 in
1953. While her works occasionally come up for auction, the bulk of her
paintings (over 500) were donated to various museums upon the death of her
husband Wilbur in 1988.

MARC CHAPAUD
(French b.1941) “La Place aux Herbs” oil on canvas, signed lower left
“Marc Chapaud”. Verso signed and with artist's label. 35”x46”.
Estimate $1,000-$1,500
Marc Chapaud was born in Paris on the 31st of July, 1941. In
1958 he enter the “Natione Superieure des Beaux Arts des Paris” to study
architecture. This was largely due to the fact that his father was an
architect. However, in 1960, he transferred to the study of painting. It
seems that the fine arts tendencies inherited from his seamstress mother
won out and in 1962, after a full course of studies, Chapaud left the
Beaux des Arts. Since then, he has had many one-man exhibitions, mainly in
Paris, but also in the U.S. and Japan. He is principally a landscape
painter but his architectural and artistic background make him skilled at
handling old buildings with their marvelous textures and their wealth of
light and shadows as exhibited in the offered lot.

In June of 1920,
Cone, together with fellow Cedar Rapids artist Grant Wood, traveled to
France on a painting excursion. A year earlier, Cone had spent about five
months studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Montpellier France, after
having served in the U.S. Army as an interpreter and aide to General
Hubert Allen. On August 22, 1920, and after having completed a month’s
worth of paintings, Cone and Wood returned to America aboard the S.S.
Grampian sailing out of Antwerp. On their return voyage, the two
artists exhibited works in the ship’s salon and subsequently at the Cedar
Rapids Art Association. While on board, Grant Wood introduced Cone to
Canadian passenger Elizabeth Winnifred Swift, whom Cone would marry one
year later. |

RUFUS PORTER
(American
1792-1884)
The
Dr. Francis Howe House Murals
Westwood,
Massachusetts, circa 1838
To
Be Sold In Five Separate Lots
Rufus
Porter was born into a successful Massachusetts farm family, on May 1,
1792 and soon after resettled with his family in Maine. His place in
American art history is that of our foremost early mural painter.
Additionally, as a portrait painter he was first to develop a method for
large scale production of quick, inexpensive portraits for the masses.
A Renaissance man if ever there was, Porter's nomadic life introduced him
to a multitude of disciplines, which he engaged with great interest.
beginning as an apprentice in his brother's shoemaking shop, Porter then
walked to Portland, Maine where he spent three years playing the fife for
military companies and the violin for parties. He then began a successful
career as a house and sign painter. He also painted sleighs, drums and
boats. This was followed by his involvement as a schoolteacher, builder,
dancing school instructor, and a writer.
It is believed that between the years of 1817 and 1819, Porter joined the
crew of a trade ship and voyaged to the northwest coast and Hawaii. Porter
fathered 16 children with two different wives, but rarely stayed home for
any length of time. From 1820-1940 Porter worked steadily as an itinerant
artist. His specialty was landscape painting on walls of rooms, which he
discussed in the book Curious Arts, which he wrote and published in
1825. He is credited with decorating well over 150 homes. His frescos,
like the offered lots, were executed in large scale on dry plaster walls.
His simple renditions provided affordable substitutes for the fashionable
but expensive and elaborate imported scenic wallpaper.
Porter
was both a visionary and extremist. He founded several scientific journals
including Scientific American, and was a prolific
inventor/designer. Unfortunately, Porter was not a savvy businessman and
never profited from his many inventions instead, usually selling his ideas
rather than patenting them. One well-known invention that Porter failed to
benefit from was his idea of the revolving rifle, which he sold for $100
to a young clothing manufacturer named Samuel Colt.
The
following Porter murals are from the house of Dr. Francis Howe, in
Westwood, Massachusetts. The house was built in 1818 and was later
demolished in 1965, at which time the offered lots were carefully
reinforced and then removed. These murals are significant in that they are
the only known examples that are both signed and dated by Porter. The
stairway mural is signed "R. Porter, 1838" on a rocky outcrop
and above that is the signature "S.T. Porter" - Stephen Twombly
Porter, Rufus Porter's son.
The
murals were executed on dry plaster and are remarkably intact and in
stable condition. The plaster was applied to lath, which is attached to
rough sawn native timbers. A large sampling of these murals were first
exhibited at the First Annual New England Antiques Show in 1967 and at the
Whitney Museum of American Art in 1968. Additionally, they have been
featured in a number of books by Jean Lipman including: Rufus Porter
Yankee Pioneer, American Folk Painters of Three Centuries (Lipman and
Armstrong) and The Flowering of American Folk Art (Lipman and
Winchester).

ERWIN STOLZ

Estimate $1,000-$1,500
Erwin Stolz was a
highly talented Viennese artist who worked in the time between two World
Wars. He was among other young artists of the time who united into a
group under the name "Hagenbund". Hagenbund members, like the
Secessionists, showcased modernist trends in Viennese art of the early
20th century. It seems that Stolz executed most of his works between the
years 1920 and 1940, as he practically terminated his activity as an
artist after WWII.
More than likely, Stolz would have had contact with
fellow Viennese artist Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt whose works most
certainly influenced his own. |
